HOCKEY.

SOFT GROUNDS. EXCITING AND FAST GAMES. Although the ground conditions were eoft on Saturday, the championship matches at Ecmuera provided very keen contests, and the principal matches were marked with small scores. The attendance of spectators showed a marked increase, and they were rewarded with games, brimful of interest. University sprang a surprise by checking Somerville's career, the teams leaving the field with honours even, 2 goals apiece. Wesley, in a hard match, defeated JSTorth Shore (for the first time with a full team) by 2 goals to 1. Papatoetoe drew with St. Luke's, 4-all.

SOMERVILLE V. UNIVERSITY. I - Play hung at midfield until Smith sent Somerville away and a nice centre from Wellbourne crossed the line. Floyd cleared the students' territory and Don was forced out at the Somerville twenty-five. From halfway E. Watts gained possession and after travelling the necessary distance transferred to C. Watts to shoot. Brown stopped and play hung in the students' half until Pickens hit uptield. Somerville soon returned and Wellbourne struggled hard *o score. but only a twenty-five resulted. Crawley broke away and his pass to Broun was returned nicely, which enabled the centre forward to reach the ci.rcle. He had a couple of shots without success. The next serious attack came from University and from a corner by Crawley Smith just managed to save. Another onslaught wns nullified by Hedges. Somerville worked goalwards, but Wellbourue was too slow In delivering nnd Broun and Fraeer replied -with a good run on the right and Crawley, from the nick, made an attempt at goal. Beating Pickens for the ball E. Watts got away, but sent the leather over the bar. Working along the right, play drifted Into the circle, where Somerville conceded a corner and Crawley made no mistake. University 1, Somerville 0.

A free hit gave University a footing in Somerville territory, and Don, accepting a pass from the right, drove the ball into the net. University 2, Somerville 0. This reverse aroueed'Somervllle, and W«llbourne centring hard, E. Watts reached the circle, •where to all intents the ball seemed allowed to go in to the goal. University 2, Somerville 1. The students now suffered the full fury of the Somervllle attack, Wellbourne and C. "Watts fighting desperately, but University escaped with a corner. Then came a reaction, University penning down Somerville, and some hot work ensued in front of the Somerville goal. Somerville ■worked back again, and from a roll the ball -went to E. Watts, who evened the ecores. University used the right Uauk, and reaching the circle, Floyd and Broun shot hard to see Delahunty make a great save. Both teams strove hard, each circle being under fire. From a corner a terrific shot by Floyd rattled against the pads of the defenders, then followed a great run along the right flank by E. Watts, who centred, but the chance went begging. Another onslaught, and a breathless escape for University, then came their turn, and they were fighting round the Somerville goal when play ceased. Somerville 2 University - Messrs. A. Playle and H. E. Watts umpired.

WESLEY V. NORTH SHORE. Many exchanges by the respective backs marked the opening stages until in lnidfleld Fleet got possession and a neat passing run bv the W esley forwards took play to Shore's circle, where Jones came across and, snapping the ball away from Philpott, cleared to tne left. Shore then advanced up that flank, Surman frustrating the attack and the ball crossed the goal line. Anthony headed another raid and a sharp attack ended through Vaughan being offside The free hit was intercepted and Snore swarined Into the circle, a dangerous situation being saved by Burton. Philpott then reversed the score, taking play to Shore's circle, where L. Carter saved. Snappy passing runs by the Wesley vanguard followed until Neale, heading for the goal was cleverly intercepted by Carter, ■who sent the ball to Cos. Up swept Shore, a corner -was gained, but sticks relieved Wesley. Back to the circle came Shore, but scrambling play in the goalmouth cost a line chance, a twenty-five bully reuniting. Coming down the right Wesley attacked nicely, the ball going across to Philpott, who netted with a hard ehot. Wesley 1, Shore 0. Shore broke through Upon resuming, Wesley checking. Surman sent to Philpott, who cross-lilt. Chapman travelled up the right, Jouea stopping progress. The greens then swept Into the circle and Shore conceded a corner. The shot was intercepted and play returned to midfield. Fleet again put his forwards on the aggressive, but Chapman's hit lacked direction, and Shore swept to Wesley's end, Anthony s shot going wide. Wesley's vanguard were auickly away, gaining a corner, and Smith, getting a chance, goaled. Wesley 2, Shore 0. Wesley were noon back In the circle, Ueale's shot missing the net. Williamson opened an attack for Shore and from an exciting situation in the goalmouth Cox netted. Wesley 2 North Shore 1 Messrs. G. Waddingham and A. Rivers lefereed. ST. LUKE'S V. PAPATOETOE. From the bully St. Luke's attacked, but ■were sent back by the local full-backs. Play at this stage ranged from one end of the field to the other. St. Luke's at last got away and invaded the red and blacks' territory. Airpy etopped a hot shot from Corin, but Vipond waa handy and netted from the rebound. St. Luke's 1, Papatoetoe 0.
