BACK TO WORK.

ROTARY CLUB SCHEME. TRIAL IN CHRISTGHURCH. SUGGESTION FROM BRISTOL. The Christchurch Rotary Club is initiating a campaign to induce employers and others to provide more work for tradesmen this winter. The scheme has been approved by the Mayor, Mr. D. G. Sullivan, M.P., who has given his endorsement, states the " Christchurch Star." Recently, the president of the community service committee of the Rotary Club waited on the Mayor with the information that the club had been for some time considering a trial in Christchurch of what was known last winter among several Rotary clubs in England as the " Bristol Back to Work Scheme."

It was explained by representatives of the Rotary Club that the scheme would suggest that a strong community effort should be made to keep skilled workers particularly in their jobs, all citizens putting in hand at once any work or purchases that they could see their way to undertake so as to keep down the list of unemployed during the winter months. The Mayor and those associated with him, after consideration, r advised the Rotary Club that there seemed to bo no reason, from the point of view of the present organisations, why the scheme should not be gone on with, as it was not an appeal to the public for funds, and should not interfere with the appeal for the relief of distrees. The Rotary Club has now advised the Mayor that its circulars, with a certificate from Mr. Sullivan, will bo sent out by the end of the present month. In a statement later, the Mayor heartily commended the scheme, and expressed the hope that citizens would co-operate. He said that the plan had heen tried out elsewhere with success. The idea was that people who had delayed putting necessary work in hand should agree to have the work done this winter and should pledge themselves to have the work done at ordinary rates of pay and under ordinary conditions of labour. "I am very grateful for the help of the Rotary Club in this matter," said Mr. Sullivan, "and I appreciate the public spirit and humanitarian outlook it« members are displaying. If successful, the scheme will be of very great help to those who are in most need of assistance, and will promote a revival of trade and industry in the citv."
