WITH THE AMATEURS

MANUKAU CLUB. FIXTURES. Saturday, May 10.—221-MllC Senior, 0-Mile Junior. Sunday, May 20.—Helensville Run, Kc'sei'voii , , U ain Monday, June 4.—Hamilioii Road Race, 1.30 p.m.The best club entry since 1930 patronised the Manukau Amateur Cycling Club's races on Saturday. Forty-live members lode; the delightfully aunny weather undoubtedly was the encouraging factor. Satin-day's senior event of seven laps, ■liva niilcs, was a eurvivai-oi-the-fittedt race. Ketiremeuts were tar 100 many, and there was evidence 01 lack of training, for only 17 finished. Only a lew were genuine retirements through tyre or mechanical trouble. The limit men, XV. W. b. Brown, K. J. Collins and Cyril Halpiii were given 8.0 start, equal to 30UyUe a mile, from. Johnnie lirown and Lets. -Dwight. Arthur H. Dwight (0.30) was the winner alter a fast sprint with Bill Brown and Norm. Howe. Arthur rode a well-judged race, and reserved his energy for the haul I effort. He is one of the four Dwight brothers, who are all top rlightcrcs, and ad u family have no equals in the Dominion. It was his first road victory, but ho has not done much road work. Bill Brown, second off the limit (8.0), ia a brother of the scratch man. Although not so stockijy built as his brother, he is a fairly powerful pedaller. The ex-Rotorua rider Norm Howe, third oil' 0.30, shaped well. Howe would possibly have won the race held three weeks ago had not a puiicture put him out when leading. Bill Morris (j.30) startled many when ho headed off star road riders like .Tack .Dolores (1933 100-mile race winner), Tom Nixon, Sol. Webster and Dave Lawtson. Bill finished fourth. Morris was third in last year's "100" off 30.0, and if he continues to improve will be well up iu this year's race on October 6 next. On the difficult and hilly Avondale South course Johnnie Brown has given enough evidence that he is unapproachable. Last week, for the fourth successive race, ho was fastest. He took 49.17 to do the 17% miles. Les. Dwight, whose form this year has so far been disappointing, could not go more than one lap with Brown. As an unpaced rider he has few equate. Junior A. W. J. Brumby, off 1.45, won the 10-mile junior race after a hard finish with Ernie Tucker and D. C. Moxon. Brumby was only 49s slower than (ieo. Holland (scr.). Holland and Chas. Dwight had a great sprint for time honours, but Geo. prevailed by two lengths. His time was 29.41. Last season Holland was fastest over the same distance in 30.42. He trains well, rides fair, and says little.

Riders on long marks who manage to reel off a lap before the scratch men depart are reminded that they render themselves liable to disqualification if they accept pace when the scratch men pass them. If the scratch riders are good enough to give them such a big start they should at least be sporting enough to resist taking pace.

The King's Birthday week-end promises to be a busy one for local wheelmen with the centre's race to Kuineu, via the Swahfion tunnel hill, on the Saturday, and the Hamilton race of 46 miles on the Monday, for which latter a big team of city riders ie entering.

Many enthusiasts wonder where Ron Foubister is nowadays. He rode once tliif season, but wisely decided to" retire, foi he was troubled with his back, which h< injured a few seasons ago. Last -year, h< raced rarely, but did much gymnasiuir work in an endeavour to strengthen tin weakened muscles. He acts in an officia capacit}' at the road events now. LYNNDALE AMATEURS. FIXTURES.
