THE AMERICA CUP.
ENDEAVOUR READY FOR TRIALS. RUGBY, May 6. The yacht Endeavour, challenger for the America Cup, is now ready for her trials. If the -weather is favourable these will begin immediately on the Solent. For the first time in the history of the 14 contests ;for the America Cup Britain now has the advantage of being able to try out her official challenger, in this case Mr. T. O. M. Sopwith's Endeavour, with two boats of the same sizes and class. The two boats are Shamrock V-. the last challenger, and Mr. Stephenson's Velsheda, built Inst year. All three boats were designed by Mr. Chas. Nicholson and built by Camper and Nicholson, of Goxport. The. New York Yacht Club, holders of the cup, presented -by the owners of the original winner, the schooner America, has agreed to amend the, rules so that if either of the two boats. Shamrock or Velsheda, prove to be faster than the challenger, the best boat may be sent as Britain's representative. In all previous contests the challenger had to be named ten months ahead and ho substitute was allowed. Tho trials will extend over the next two months and will include His Majesty's Britannia and possibly two other J class cutters. ' In : July the selected boat will .be got ready for the voyage across to New I Yorkt' where the lirst race ■■ for the- cup.- is -set for Saturday.-September 15.
