MR B. CARTER'S RECORD,

A fine record of service stands to the credit of Mr. David Carter, Auckland manager for the Union Company, who is to retire on superannuation at the end of next month. During the fifty years that he has been with the company he has risen from office boy to branch manager.

Mr. Carter joined the company on November 1, 1883, at Auckland, where he had been born and educated. The office was then in Fort Street, and the staff numbered only six. Later the

company's office was moved to Palmerston Buildings, at the corner of Queen and Customs Street West, where it remained until 1921, the year in which it was removed to its present home in Maritime Buildings, Quay Street. Today the office staff alone numbers over 50.

After spending 10 years at Auckland Mr Carter was transferred to Westport, and later to Christchurcli. He returned to Auckland in 1902 as chief clerk. In the same year he was moved to the company's Melbourne office. After four years there he returned to New Zealand to become branch manager at Greymouth, where he remained for 12 years. In 1918 he was transferred to Suva, to take over control of the company's interests in Fiji, whence he was moved for a short period to Newcastle. In April, 1921, he was appointed manager of the Auckland office, the position which he hold»3 to-day. Early in his career Mr. Carter was at sea for some time as a purser. As a young man he was a member of the West End Rowing Club. He is one of the oldest members of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, having been a member of the original Auckland Yacht Club. Most of his sailing was done in the yachts Mapu and Yum Yum. Mr. Carter has been chairman of the Auckland Shipping and Stevedoring Association since his appointment as Auckland manager, while he is also a director of the United Repairing Company. He intends to leave New Zealand, accompanied by Mrs. Carter, for the coming winter, and will later live in retirement in Devonport.
