INCLUSION ASKED.

AUCKLAND MILK AREA

PETITION FROM OTAHUHU.

"CUT-THROAT COMPETITION."

A petition asking that Otaliuhu should be included in the Auckland Metropolitan Milk Council's district came before the council at its meeting this morning. The petition was signed by ten vendors, and it was stated that more signatures could have been obtained if time had allowed.

The petition stated that cut-throat competition was on an uneconomic basis and was reducing vendors to such a position that in the near future they would not be able to carry on if the present prices continued.

The Otaliuhu Borough Council advised ■that at its last meeting it had received a deputation from local vendors in regard to their petition, and had promised to reconsider the matter. The letter asked the Milk Council to defer coming to a decision in regard to the petition pending receipt of a further communication from the Borough Council. In a letter to the milk council, one producer-vendor stated that his personal •view was that the Borough Council was definitely opposed to the inclusion of Otaliuhu on the ground that the price of milk would be increased and the fear that the zoning of rounds was inevitable.. The writer added that the Mayor of Otaliuhu, he thought, was of •the opinion that Otaliuhu was intentionally excluded. Tlia-t opinion, the writer •understood, was incorrect and arose from the fact that the borough was not represented at any of the meetings called by the Mayor of Auckland previous to' the introduction of the Milk (Bill.

"As the council has asked that we should reserve our decision until they have further considered the matter, I think we should do so." commented the chairman, Mr. G. W. Hutchison. A motion that the council should defer the matter was moved by Mr. H. F. W. Meikle and seconded by Mr. I. JGoldstine, who suggested that before the board decided to extend its boundaries it should take the opportunity of ascertaining whether there were other districts in the council's area desirous of being included.

A report of discussion by the Otahuhu Borough Council appears on page 13.
