PURCHASE OF RADIUM. SUPPLIES FOR RELIEF CASES. The Auckland Hospital Board met on Tuesday afternoon, the chairman, Jlr. W. Wallace, presiding. Supplies.—The tender of Hutchinson Bros., Ltd., for jupplies to.recipients of relief was accepted, being the lowest of four. The tender of Rowlands and Son was accepted for the Onehunga district, and that of the Farmers' Union Trading Co. for the Pukekohe district. Indigent Children.—An appeal from the Manurewa Children's Home for payment of maintenance for certain indigent children in the home was referred to the relief committee for report. Fire Appliances.—ln a report on the fire-fighting appliances at the infirmary, the Auckland Fire Board stated that the whole of the hose needed replacing, and suggested the purchase of hand chemical extinguishers. The matter was referred to the infirmary committee for report. Infirmary Superintendent.—Twenty-nine applications for the position of lady superintendent of the infirmary were received, and these were reduced to 12, of whom three were reported to be outstanding. The board decided to make further inquiry into their qualifications. Radium for Hospital—A recommendation that 30 needles of various types, containing a total of 38.3 milligrammes of radium' and costing between £800 and £1000 should be purchased was contained in a report submitted to the board by the consultation committee. The chairman, Mr W Wallace, said that the board had already £750 in hand for the purchase of radium. The matter was referred to the finance and purchase committee, to confei with Dr. W. Gilmour. St. John Nurses.—A request from the nursing division of the St. John Ambulance that members be allowed to attend the hospital at certain hours and carry out minor duties, in order to obtain an insight into technical aspects ot hospital routine, was received. and referred to the house committee. .Dr. Ji. B. Gunson expressed the hope tha* unless there were insuperable difficulties m the way, the request would be acceded to, as it was definitely in the public interest that the ambulance trainees should learn as much as possible.
