LOCAL BODIES.
NEWMARKET COUNCIL. The Newmarket Borough Council met last evening. The Mayor (Mr. S. Donaldson) presided. Films on Good Friday—lt was decided to give permission for the screening of films on Good Friday. Street Collections. —The ' Community Sunshine Association was given permission to hold a street collection on May 25. Sinking Fund Payments.—lt was recommended by the legal and finance committee that no further sinking fund payments should be made pending the flotation of the conversion loan approved by the Loc.il Government Loans Board. It was stated that preliminary work in connection with the loan had been carried out.
MOUNT WELLINGTON ROAD BOARD
The fortnightly meeting of the Mount Wellington Road Board was held last evening, those present being Messrs. W. Gollan (chairman), H. Hay, N. Walters. R. M. McCulloeh and G. H. Kay. Passes for Children. —Mr. W. J. Jordan, M.P., advised that as the result of representations made by him to the Hon. Minister of Education it had been arranged that children from the Mount Wellington and Panmure districts attending secondary schools in Auckland would be granted free passes on the railway to and from the Panmure station. The board resolved to convey its thanks to Mr. Jordan for his ready attention to the matter and to congratulate him on the success achieved. Poppy Day Collection. —Both the Mount Wellington and Otahuhu branches of the Returned Soldiers' Association approached the boards for permission to canvass the district on Poppy Day for the sale of poppies. It was resolved to grant permission to the Mount Wellington branch and to notify the Otahuhu Association that it could not canvass the Westfield area north of Portage Road. 'Traffic Amendments.—The Commissioner of Transport submitted an outline of the amendments proposed to be made to the motor vehicle regulations dealing with the exemption of fire engines from heavy traffic licenses, the loads to be carried on trailers, and the method of attaching trailers and caravans to motor cars, and also enabling motor drivers' licenses to be renewed without personal application. The board considered that the amendments were desirable and resolved to recommend accord-
ingly. Water Charges.-—An application from nine Chinese market gardeners for a reduction in the price of water to enable thcin to carry 011 their gardens under present difficult conditions was considered, but it was decided that so long as the board hail to pay the present rate to the Auckland City Council it was not possible to rcduca the charge to consumers. Traffic Fees. —It was resolved to make representations to the Hon. Minister of Transport urging that the basis of allocating heavy traffic license fees amongst the local bodies recently approved by him be strictly adhered to, and it was also decided to express disapproval of the action of the Auckland City Council in promoting opposition to the scale fixed ,v .'
