KILLING "THE CURSE."

FIJI'S SUCCESSFUL FIGHT.

GREATEST BOON" IN CENTURY. (From Our Own Correspondent.) SUVA, March 15. The Clidemia Hirta, locally known as Roster's Curse, has proved the worst enemy to the man on the land in the colony. Its roots spread until its growth of about six feet high makes it impossible to walk through one's property. It resists every method of extinction, j the most efficient having been digging i out and ploughing, but there was always an aftermath if efforts ceased | for a few weeks. Birds have spread the seed everywhere. It became such a threat to"cultivation that the Government, through its entomologist, secured a supply of thripps from Trinidad. The result is that lands which before were impassable are now freed from the pest, and the tiny thripps promise to be the saviour of the lands of the colony.
