CITY AND SXJBUBBAIT. HOW R.V. WON. The championship of the Auckland City and Suburban Cricket Association was brought to an auspicious conclusion on Saturday after a season that has been disturbing <>nly in respect of the earner ■weather vagaries. Patrons and had cheering compensation 111 the fcnai matches, and the conditions for both days were ideal. Consistently fine play characterised the contests on Saturday and R.V. by overcoming a remarkablystuxa., challenge from Green Lane, proved themselves for the fifth occasion well wort:by of premier honours. Ponsonby and Harbour Board, by their ultimate successes, in the face of odds, over RoekiU and Mount Albert Grammar Old Boys, respectively, helped to cap creditable team Cff The S ;battle between R.V. and Green Lane will be long remembered as another indication of the game's diversity, for the fine stand by Goldsworthy (37), Cloke (43) and Guiniven up to 4.45 p.m. seemed to pipage a comfortably going win, but that complacent outlook was changed as the Green Lane attack tightened up. The air was electric as the wickets began tofall and in a -mere half hour the R.V. grip appeared likely to be entirely lost, when not a dozen runs off Green Lanes Ids total. The .board read five wickets for 10, seven for 163, eight for I(s3—two ehote by Cullum, who escaped being stumped by the merest fraction—and then Hunts stroke that carried R.V. to triuipph. all incidental to au intensely dramatic thirty minutes which crowned an appropnate occasion. The .promoted Cullum was really the hero at the climax and by continuing to bat well for 54 and. topping the score, he made a mark for himself. A. and U Kerr and Menziee -bowled well for Green Lane and E. Stallworthy also, proved an effective change. Green Lanes was brilliant at times and the work of Gillespie—particularly his one-handed falling catch —was outstanding, although, like Wicketkeeper Lonergan, he made one mistake in the .moments of high tension. R V. is to -be congratulated on its eucc««, just as Green Lane is to be credited with a grand -bid. . , Ponsonby made -an interesting late run to overtake Roskill's tally of 304. The team batted slowly at first, the advent of Counihan (50) and Robertshaw (91) put a different complexion on the game. It is significant that only one batsman failed -to reach double fibres. Allowance, of course, is made for the fact 1 that the wicket favoured the batsman. ! Gough, Bleakley and Longville shared the 1 bowling honours for Mount Roskill. = Longville also was prominent in the held. ' Wetherill (79) and Bunting (48) rei sumed in brightest fashion for Harbour Board against Mount Albert Grammar Old Bovs, whose total was 194. When Ralph Stallworthy and Breese took charge Pon- • sonbv made no race of it. StallwM-thy punished the bow-lmg unmercifully and his variety of powerful shots made hie exhibition more pleasing. His 115—the lnghest tally of the day—speaks volumes. Brewe (53), who was handicapped by a troublesome knee, was more restrained and ne t eventually retired. Here again only one ' batsman 'failed to get double figures, and as time revealed seven wickets down lor 376, it can be realised that the play was livelv enough. Of Mount Alberts bowlers Butler, Richards and Cantley were effective. '

SENIOR B GRADE. In beating Mount Albert Old Boys on Saturday at Victoria Park, the Telegraph Club won the championship for the first time. They looked like being beaten At one part of the game, as Mount Albert were leading on the first innings, but by 5.30 had gained a six-pointer. This was mainly due to the captain, Stan Rykers, who has had another good season with tne bat. He was batting when the winning hit was made and his enthusiastic colleagues rushed to the pitch and carried him off the field. This player is a good wicket-keeper and a very forceful bat, and has played a large part in the club winning the championship. Telegraph will meet the club at the bottom of senior A, and the match should provide a great game. If the Telegraph team should decide to apply for senior A status thev will have a great leader in their captain, Stan Rykers. The team have not lost a match this season.
