TALLOW, HEMP, APPLES,

HIGH COMMISSIONER'S CABLE

The Department of Agriculture has received the following cablegram, dated March 17, from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, London:—

Tallow.—Poor demand at auction. 701 casks offered, of which 14 sold. Present spot quotations arc:—Mutton: Fine. 24/; fair to good, 20/ to 22/; dark to dull, 18/ to 18/6. Beef: Sweet and/or mixed, 20/0 to 22/; fair to good, 19/ to 20/6; dark to dull, 17/6 to IS/. Mixed: Fair to good, 19/ to 20/; dark to dull, 17/ to 18/. Gut, elc.: 10/6 to 18/.

Hemp.—Manila: Market quiet but steady, with prices same as last quotations. Output January 1 to March 12, 283,000 bales, against 220,000 for the same period last year. Stocks in the United Kingdom at February 28, 17,479 bales, against 14,345 for the previous year. Stocks in Manila at March 12, • 129,000 bales, against 158,000 for the previous year. Sisal: Market firm and good business has been done. No. I grade for March-May and April-June shipments sold at. £17 10/, for May-July shipment £17 12/6. New Zealand: Market continues quiet, with 110 first-hand sales reported. Stocks in London at February 28, 21 tons, against 01 tons at the same time last year.

Apples.—Mataroa discharged in good condition generally. Market quiet. Current prices for: —Cox's Orange, '25/ to 32/6; Worcester I'earmain, 12/ to 14/; A'lfriston, 11/ to 13/; Gravenstein, 0/ to 12/. Market well supplied with American apples. Prices for Newtown Pippins and other popular varieties, 9/ to 14/.

WHEAT CARGOES, ETC. (Received 11 a.m.) LONDON, March 20. Cargoes are quiet, apart from a small inquiry tor Australians. There is a t,teadier tone- Manitobas are offered IMd to 3d down. Australians unchanged. Parcels are in quiet inquiry at lV&d to 3d down. Ex Domeneus, 19/3. Futures: — London: April, 16/11% per quarter; June, 17/11%; September, 18/8 Vi. Butter: New Zealand, 72/6 to 73/; Danish, 92/. Cheeso: White, 43/6; coloured, 43/6. Messrs. Joseph Nathan and Co. have received the following cable from their London principals. Messrs. Trengrot:f>e and Nathan, Tooley Street, dated March 19:— Butter: 73/ per cwt. Cbeese: White, 43/0 per cwt; coloured, 41/. Both markets quiet. PRICE OF GOLD. LONDON, Mercb 20.
