FROM MY COMMONPLACE BOOK.
"The blood of Jesus Christ, His Son, clcanseth us from all sin." There is no such text in the Bible as this, if we take it alone. It depends, absolutely depends, on the condition which precedes the words —"If we walk in the light.". "Cleanseth" is the present tense. It refers to a process, not accomplished once only, but ever needing to be renewed . . . We see a steamer rounding an island in front of us, churning up the waters in its progress, and, long after it has disappeared round the next headland, raising waves which all but swamp the little boats which anchor in the creeks and bays. And such may be the effect of our sins when we have passed out of sight, for they may he doing deadly injury to people who are unknown to us.
