STRUCK BY CAR.

ACCIDENT IN NEWTON. YOUNG WOMAN IN HOSPITAL. MOTORIST BEFORE COURT. At the intersection of Ivarangahape Road and Edinburgh Street, at 8.40 last evening, Miss Isabcllc Jack, aged 21, of CO, Lincoln Street, Ponsonby was knocked down by a motor car and received head injuries and abrasions. She was removed to the Auckland Hospital in a St. John ambulance. The driver of the car which is. alleged to have knocked the young woman down was later arrested by Constable Shralft on a charge of being found in a state of intoxication while in charge of a motor car in Great North Road. The man arrested, John Spencer, aged 37, insurance agent, appeared before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., in the Police Court tli is morning. Senior Sergeant Flanagan asked that accused be remanded until Saturday next. "We allege that accused drove his car along Kararjgaliapc Road and that at the intersection of Edinburgh Street, while travelling at a speed estimated at between 40 and 45 miles an hour, he knocked this young woman down," said Senior Sergeant Flanagan. "After colliding with her, he speeded up and drove on, but he was chased by two young men on motor cycles and they stopped him at the corner of Williamson Avenue and Sussex Street. He then put on speed again and came back along New North Road, where lie was stopped near the Empress Theatre and arrested. He was found to be intoxicated. The young woman in hospital is in a serious condition, and is expected to be operated on to-day." Mr. Allan Moody, who appeared for accused, applied for bail in accused's own recognisance. Ho was a married man and in a good permanent position. He owned the motor car which was involved in the case, and had other assets. Bail of £50 was allowed, the magistrate insisting that accused should not drive the car in the meantime. He also ordered him to report daily to the police. "The police have taken possession of the car," said Senior Sergeant Flanagan.
