VICAR FAREWELLED.
ONEHUNGA GATHERING. SUCCESSOR WELCOMED. Tho retiring vicar of St. Peter's Anglican Church, Onehunga, the Rev. H. M. Smyth, and his successor, the Rev. T. H. C. Partridge, were entertained by a large gathering of parishioners last evening in the Parish Hall. Mr. E. Wriglev, the vicar's warden, who presided, said Mr. Smyth had been vicar of the parish for nearly 13 years and had been compelled to relinquish his charge owing to failing health. Addresses were delivered by tho Rev. E. S. Harknese, Methodist minister, the Mayor of Onehunga, Mr. E. Morton, Mr. R. Basliam, people's warden, and Mr. A. Rowe. All epoke highly of Mr. Smyth's ministry in Onehunga, and tendered a cordial welcome to the new vicar. Mr. Wrigley presented Mr. Smyth with a wallet of notes, also a handsomely framed and inscribed photograph of the church in various aspccts, and a shield with photographs of St. Peter's Church, old and new, with his own photograph in the centre, remarking that the new church would always stand as a monument to Mr. Smyth's energy and perseverance. Mrs. Smyth was unable to be present owing to indisposition. Appreciation of the many kindnesses to the poor of Onehunga found expression in valuable gifts which were received by Mr. Smyth oil her behalf. The addresses were interspersed with musical and elocutionary items, followed by a social hour for refreshments.
