MAIL CONTRACTOR.
DROVE ON WRONG SIDE. AN UNUSUAL "DEFENCE. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WAIHI, Wednesday. An unusual'defence was raised in the Waihi Court to-day by a defendant charged with driving on the wrong side of the road. The defendant, Clarence Kennedy, who is the mail contractor between Waihi and the Waihi Beach, submitted that he was the King's servant as mail carrier, and as such had a right to the road. Questioned on the point by the borough traffic inspector, Mr. J. Spence. defendant replied that what he had stated was in the laws, and had always been in the laws. The Magistrate (Mr. F. W. Platte): You are entirely mistaken in making that assertion. You are subject to the same rules and regulations as other people are. You were clearly in the wrong. A fine of with costs was imposed.]
