SKID AND CRASH.
CARS HIT HEAD-ON. FINE FOR NEGLIGENCE. (From Our Own Correspondent.> PUKEKOHE, Wednesday. A motorist, William Claude Motion, of Otaua, was charged in the Pukekohe Magistrate's Court to-day, before Mr. F. H. Levien, S.M., with negligent driving and further with failing to keep to the left side of the road. Constable A. Murray, who prosecuted, stated that on December 21 last a collision occurred between a baby car driven by Miss M. Jamieson, of Paerata, and a large sedan ear driven by the defendant. The collision had occurred on a straight stretch of road about 23ft in width. Marjorie Jamieson, driver of the baby par, stated that she. was returning homo from the pictures in Pukekohe at about 10.25 p.m., when she saw a car approaching her. She was right over oil her left. side. When it was about ->0 yards off, it swerved and came straight towards her, hitting her car head on. Her car capsized into the grass at the side of the road. Corroborative evidence was given by a passenger in Miss Jamieson's car. Defendant stated that his car skidded as it was approaching Miss Jamieson's car, and a collision was unavoidable. There had been .no negligence, as his speed was not more than 25 miles an hour. The magistrate held that, as defendant had admitted there was loose metal on the road, and he knew the grader had been over it, lie should have slowed down to 15 miles an or less to remove any risk. In faifr!** to do fio he was guilty of negligence. Defendant was convicted and fined 10/, and coets ,£2 5/3.
