SWIMMING.

MOUNT EDEN CARNIVAL.

GRAMMAR TAKES BIG RELAY. CRUMP BEATS WHARE A ITU'S TIME. For three hours the aquatic events staged by the Mount Eden Swimming Club last night held the interest of a splendid crowd —despite the early prospects of a wet night. The programme was a most varied one, there being many relay races, besides the usual swimming events, school rivalry being very keen throughout the heats and finals of races for the Nicholson and Stevenson Shields and Herbert Smith Trust Cups. The Auckland senior champions were "welcomed home" by Mr. E. H. I'otter, president of the centre, who referred to their "marvellous" performance in winning the Yaldhurst Shield by a margin of 44 points. Xoel Crump soon proceeded to justify the great ovation he got from a crowd always jealous of the reputation of its own star performer, Bob Frankham. The new Auckland and Dominion 100 and 220 yards champion in the course of the 50 yards inter-club dash twice beat the national record established by W. Whaieaitu at the New Zealand championship carnival at Napier in February, 1933. Edna Rainey swam a fast couple of lengths, returning 40 3-5s for the 66 2-3 yards, in which she finished second in the final to the coming Waitemata champion, Marjorie Black. It should be noted that, when these young swimmers dead-heated in the final of the hundred at the Waitemata carnival on February 12, Edna Rainey actually went that distance in 65 2-ss, equal to the fastest time put up by Frances Bult when in New Zealand in December—this is only three-fifths of a second outside Marie Farquhar's Dominion record. The Auckland breaststroke champion, J. Magee (scratch), and the New Zealand lady champion, Judith Webster (15s), had a stirring tussle in the 150 yards breaststroke handicap. They dead-heated in 2.1 and 2.16 respectively. There are many who believe the girl was undoubtedly first to touch last night.

The club diving championship was a spectacular event, and Wilfrid Hassan, national title holder, had a hard job to beat Bob Frankham and M. Matthew, only a point separating the placed men. The 333 1-3 yards inter-club relay championship, the chief event on the Programme, was won by the Grammar Cluo, which therefore holds for one year the cup presented by residents of the Mount Eden district. Waitemata was second and Ponsonby,' the. previous holders of the trophy, third. It was a splendid race, but Frank" Smith swam so well as fourth man that Jack Enwriglit had no chance ot catching Keg Thomas with the start the latter had in the fifth and final flutter.
