NEW BRIDGES URGENTLY NEEDED.—Two sections of stringers from the Puhoi bridge on the main northern highway, which was partly washed away by the recent floods. The condition of the pinus insignis is illustrated by the two pencils (marked X) and a paper knife, which were easily driven deep into the wood. This bridge is described as " only one instance " of the many needing replacement.
