RATIONED TEACHERS. SCHEME IN OPERATION. POSITION AT WELLINGTON. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Wednesday. An assurance that the rationing scheme for teachers without permanent employment was not being abused in the Wellington Education Board's district was given by the chairman at to-day's meeting. The chairman said that on the board's list there -were 206 certificated teachers who were available for probationary assistantships, additional assistantships and relieving positions.' • All these were engaged, their classification being: Probationary assistantship, at £00, Hi; additional assistantships, at £00, 98; relieving positions, at the scale rate, 15; and relieving positions, at £00, 17. In no case was any one of these teachers filling a position to which a permanent teacher could be appointed. In regard to the allocating of additional assistants, 32 schools had two each and 34. had one each. The Wellington board had received no complaints in regard to the working of the new scheme... r . : :s . In subsequent discussion, during which two .members took the view that the Department was sweating the poorer paid'teachers, the chairman said it was desirable; that trainings be provided for young teachers just out of the training college. He added . that all would get more than they were paid last year. Some of the members" said the Minister was to be congratulated on the scheme. The discussion' then lapsed.
