METCALFE IN FORM.

BREAKS THREE N.Z. RECORDS. AUSTRALIANS AT WAIMATE. HAMPSON'S GREAT FINISH. (By Telegraph.—-Press Association.) WAIMATE, Wednesday. The visiting Australian athletes, J. P. Metcalfe, E. W. Banvick, and T. S. Hampson. made their initial appearance in New Zealand at a sports meeting here to-day. New Zealand champions also competed. The weather was fine and sunny, and there was a good attendance of the public, but a strong, gusty southerly wind and a heavy track did not provide the best of conditions. Metcalfe, who is considered the greatest jumper ever produced in Australia, broke the New Zealand high jump record of 6ft 2%in by %in. The spongy turf and a strong side wind affected his jumping. His record is Oft 6%in. In the broad jump Metcalfe reached 23ft 6Vih\ with the wind behind him. His own record is 24ft Gin. He also surpassed the New Zealand hop, step and jump record of 48ft 2V£in by achieving 50ft 2%in. Application is being nyide for recognition of the records for Metcalfe, excepting the broad jump, on account of the wind being behind him. Hampson, who is considered the most consistent amateur sprinter in Australia, showed his outstanding ability by the way he gathered in the field to win by nearly a foot in the 100 yds from J. D. Carmicliael and .T. B. McFarlane, the New Zealand champion. His time, 10 l-ss, was most creditable under the conditions. He beat McFarlane by four yards in the 220 yds invitation race in 22 2-ss, only l-5s less than the time at the New South Wales championships. Barwick was defeated in the mile by A. Dobbs (Waimate), off 90yds. Barwick's time, 4.32, is not comparable with his record of 4.16 4-5, and his recent Australian performance of 4.20. Barwick, who is the holder of the Australian mile record, and is credited with being Australia's greatest miler, did not appear again. "i At last night's meeting of the Auckland Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association the secretary (Mr. H. L. Towers) reported that the Australian athletes would compete in Auckland on March 24, and the visitors would take part in the following events: —Hampson, 100 yards, 220 yards, and possibly the 440 yards; Barwick, one mile; Metcalfe, high jump, broad jump and hop, step and jump. Disapproval was expressed regarding the fact that Barwick, who holds the Australian and New Zealand two miles record, was to compete in a mile race and not a three miles, as was originally understood. It was stated that a three miles contest between Barwick, Savidan, Cooper and Wilson would provide a great attraction, and it was resolved to write to the New Zealand Council suggesting the substitution of a three miles for the mile event. The interprovincial contest between Hawke's Bay-Poverty Bay Centre and the Auckland Centre, suggested for March 3, has been abandoned, owing to prominent athletes in the southern centre being unable to obtain leave. The question of recommendations for places in the Empire Games team from the Auckland Centre was held over until a later date.
