TO BEST ARGENTINE.; I Auckland Chilled Beef Reaches London. EXCELLENT CONDITION. (United P.A.—Electric Telegraph—Copyright) (Received 9.30 a.m.) LONDON, February 14. The first shipment of chillcd beef from Auckland has arrived in the Sultan Star. There are 1300 quarters, of which two-thirds were subjected to the carbon dioxide process in sealed holds. The remainder Avas not subjected to this process. Both sections of the cargo were identical in quality, and the conditions of loading were similar, in order to make a practical test of the different methods of carriage. Mr. Ronald Vcstey stated: "Both parts of the shipment opened perfectly. There is nothing to choose between them, and they arc fully equal to the best Argentine." The "Evening Standard" discusses at length the future of Australia's chilled beef trade through the approaching perfection of tlic use of frozen carbondioxide bricks, one pound of which will do as much as four pounds of ice and will give quicker and lower temperatures. Experiments are. being conducted in the hope of keeping Australian beef in perfect condition for 10 weeks, in which case there is no reason why Australian should not entirely supplant Argentine. It is expected that the first experimental Australian cargo will be carried this year. The Sultan Star was the second of the Blue Star Line vessels to load at Auckland under the new agreement with the produce boards. The steamer s initial shipment of chillcd beet quarters was transported and handled with special care at the port to ensure that the meat would be put aboard in the best possible condition. New railway vans, specially constructed for the purpose, were used, and the quarters were exposed to normal temperatures for a minimum of tune. The second chilled lieef consignment, comprising 21.51 quarters, left Auckland by the Avclona Star on February 3. Ihe same care was taken with this shipment, and the quarters were hung in specially sealed chilling rooms.
