IN THE HIGH ALPS.
TIMARU WOMAN'S CLIMB. ATTEMPT ON MOUNT TASMAN. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WAIHO GORGE, Wednesday. A party comprising Miss Marjorie Edgar Jones, of Timaru, and Guides Jack Cox and Mark Lysons, of Franz Joeef Glacier, left for the Chancellor Ridge on Thursday and proceeded to the Pioneer Ridge bivouac the next day. On Saturday they traversed Glacier Peak and Douglas Peak. Ascendr ing Glacier Peak by the north-west face, they proceeded along the north-east ridge up the short but steep rock pitch and so to the summit. After cutting steps down the steep snowcap, the descent of the "hair-raising" northwest rock arete began. The rocks were good, but on the first few hundred feet of the ridge were exceedingly sharp and steep. The double rope had to be used to negotiate several smooth or overhanging pitches. About down -they cut into a snow couloir and
descended it to the snowfield, reaching the bivouac after about 13J hours' climbing. On Monday the same party attempted Mount Tasman, by way of Engineer Col, but were forced to turn back about half-way to the shoulder owing to the high wind. From Engineer Col they traversed Lenderfeldt to Marcel Pass,. returning to Waiho yesterday.
