MORE RECORDS.

WAITEMATA CARNIVAL WA LI) EN JOHNSON AND MONA LEYDON EXCEL. GREAT SWIM BY ALAN PASCOE. The outstanding features of the enterprising Waitemata Amateur Swimming and Life-saving Club's fifth carnival at the Tepid Baths last night were the establishment of two fresh Dominion records, and a magnificent performance by a junior. There was a splendid attendance for a Monday, and the crowd was treated to an interesting all-round entertainment. If any criticism could be offered it would be that there were too many long-distance events on the programme for one evening.

Still an intermediate, tne effort of Walden Johnson in knocking 1.11 1-5 off the 12-year-old New Zealand record of N. S. Batchelor (Canterbury) for half a mile —26 lengths of the baths —was perhaps the best distance swim ever done in tlit Dominion. Not only did he always look like setting new figures, but as his attempt on the record was a special one he was compelled to go the long journey alone. The young Mount Eden champion's time was 11.14 1-5, compared with Bachelor's 12.26.

Mona Ley don, the Auckland and New Zealand furlong and quarter-mile churapicfti, easily retained her provincial title in the great time of 5.54 3-5. This clipped five seconds off her own Dominion record put up at the Auckland championship meeting in 1933. Her time was only 4 2-5s slower than the Australian record time, 5.50 1-5, in which the English champion, Joyce Cooper, recently defeated at Sydney the Australian champion, Edna Davcy (5.51).

Another remarkable effort was that of Alan l'ascoe, New Zealand junior champion, who was clocked at 5.44 2-5 when lie swam second to Reg Thomas (5.20 2-5 —a tip-top standard) in the quarter-mile open handicap. Although it cannot be recognised, the youngster's time was three seconds faster than "Buster" Olds' (Otago) Dominion junior record established as far back as 1927. When Noel Crump and P. V. Bullivant (Wanganui) tied in the intermediate 440 yards championship at Riddit'ord Baths, Lower llutt, on January 23, 1932, their time was 5.5.L, so that in improving on those figures by nearly seven seconds last night l'ascoe, who is still a junior officially, showed form hall-marking him as a future open New Zealand champion. It must be noted, however, that Crump and Bullivant swam in fresh water at llutt, and the difference against them in time was equal to approximately two seconds for one hundred yards. Pascoc's time in winning the national furlong at Palmerston North last month was 2.45. Crump went 2.56 when he accounted for the same title at Ashburton in 1931, but before he actually left junior ranks ho had done something round 2.40.

A good but unsuccessful attempt to lower L. Fairgray's Auckland senior backstroke record of 1.52 3-5 was made by Bob Buchanan, an improving all-round swimmer. His time was 1.59.

Exceptionally fast sprints were made by the New Zealand intermediate girl champion, Edna liainey (Is), in the 100 yards ladies' handicap. After winning a heat in GO 3-os, she dead-heated with Mario Black (8s) in the final in GO 2-ss. Ono of the most popular victories of the night was that of "Buster" Gibbons in a heat of the boys' two-lap race. The big cliap seldom, if ever, misses a carnival, and is always a great trier. The carnival ollieiuls were:— Kenny, (i. Hedges, It. iloore; referee, W. J. Davidson; timekeepers, E. Maude, J. Maude, J. K. Douglas, C. A. Edcnborougli; Diving judges, W. J. Gibbons, I'.
