FOR SYMPHONY CONCERTS. "One has to go abroad to ascertain the veneration that is paid to the higher 'forms of music," said Mr. Walter Lorig. of Wellington, who has just returned from a world tour. "During my etay at Monte Video, I had the pleasure of hearing: the municipal orchestra in that •city. were from 110 to 120 instrumentalists in the orchestra, and the standard —well, how can I give you an idea of its excellence? I should say it was just ar far ahead of the New South •Wales State Conservatorium Orchestra, under Henri Verbrugghen, as that orchestra T"as ihead of our local symphony orchestra. "One little thing I noticed we cou.a do well to copy. Above the orchestra in the centre was a sheet of darkened "lass in a neat frame. Just before the end of a movement in a symphony the word ' c ilenee' appeared thereon. Thi<=. of couise, is intended to_ eh»':k those who mip;ht applaud, believing that it is the end of the piec-e. Sum applause generally breaks the continuity of interest on the part of the audience. I think this device, which could be supplied, for a few shillings, might be introduced at our symphony concerts. I am sure Mr. Leon de Mauny would appreciate it." _
