GRAFT ALLEGED.
Foreigners Favoured in Mines in West Australia. OFFICIAL DENIAL GIVEN. PERTH, February 6. The West Australian Minister of Public Works, Mr. A. McCallum, discounts allegations that graft prevails in the mines. Australian miners had alleged that preference was shown to foreigners, some of whom, they said, had paid £5 to £10 to secure employment. Furthermore, foreigners were said to have been favoured in piece work because the shift bosses received a percentage of their earnings. Mr. McCallum said the Chamber of Mines had denied these allegations. He intimated that if any proof of such practices was forthcoming they would be stamped out and those who accepted money would be dismissed.
