On the War Path.—Looking for one's adversary with every intention of catching him j thoroughly roused or angered. To Swim with the Stream. —To allow one's actions and principles to be* guided solely by the force of public opinion. A Sprat to Catch a Mackerel.—To give a small thing in the hope of getting something much more valuable. To Carry Coals to Newcastle.—To do what is superfluous; to take something where it is already plentiful. Newcastle, of course, is a great coal port. The French have a saying, "To carry water to the river." To Nip in the Bud.—To destroy before it has had time to develop; usually said of bad habits. To Make One Sing Another Tune.— To make him change his behaviour altogether; to make him take back what he has said. / 1
