NEW ZEALAND ON HOLIDAY.
ATTRACTIVE SILHOUETTES RECEIVED. CAN YOU MAKE A "NUT-SHELL" STORY? Dear Boys and Girls, — Artists, it seems, were waiting for a chance to contribute to .the Budget, for the work received for the silhouette competition Conducted in these pages a fortnight ago was very good. Very cleverly drawn was the contribution of Esme Quick. The scene she selected was typical of New Zealand on holiday. In the foreground was a camp on the shores of a harbour in which a launch was shown, whilst three people were bathing nearby. A tree fern towered upwards even above the rugged mountain range that formed the background to the picture—a most effective piece of work. Joan McLaren must have spent a great deal of time on her entry, which depicted a motor picnic, 'i his competitor made good use of thin white outlines. A beach seen; was .well represented by Robin Waine, who also employed white outlines to get shape and life into her figures. All three competitors demonstrated considerable skill, showing that they have an eye for outline and know the principles of perspective. Neva Morrison won the fourth prize and deserved special mention for the splendid silhouette she obtained with lead pencil alone. "Nut-shell" stories are always amusing and they arc not -hard to construct. All you need do is tell a simple tale in a short, pithy sentence. This week prizes are offered for good /Sffi ■ "nut shell" stories, which may be either i |J,j "*^ copied or original. For fulj particulars rj/ fZ A *~*gff see the competition which appears elsewhere on this page. SjA*Z^^
