THREE RECORDS.

SWIMMING TITLES. NATIONAL FIGURES BEATEN. CRUMP IN GREAT FORM. Three New Zealand swimming records went by the board at the Tepid Baths last evening, when the Auckland senior championships were decided. A packed attendance —a large number of people were unable to gam admission —saw >>oel Crump, still an intermediate, set new national figures for the "hundred" and the furlong, and Miss Judith Webster clip 4s off her own record for the 220 yds breaststroke. It was a great night, and the high standard provided suggested that Auckland's prestige in Dominion swimming is likely to be increased fct the Dominion championships at Christchurch in February. The one disappointing feature of the tourney was the paucity of entries in some of the events.

The great time registered by Crump in winning the men's 100 yds championship, 55 l-ss, lowered the Dominion record by 3-ss. It was a brilliant swim, and the announcement of the time was greeted with spirited applause. Not content with his success in the sprint, the North Shore champion later in the evening took onefifth of a second off R. Frankham's record of 2.22 1-5 for the furlong. In the 220 yds ladies' breaststroke championship Miss J- Webster registered the splendid time of-2.23 3-5, thus reducing her own Auckland and national record by four clear seconds.

Miss Marie Farquhar, holder of the ladies' *100 yds and 220 yds free style, and the 100 yds backstroke championships, did not defend her titles. Miss B. Lewin took the 100 yds free style and backstroke, while the 220 yds title went to Miss M. Leydon.

J. Mageo easily retained his breaststroke title, while Hassan once again was awarded the low board diving championship. A. Raper retained the 150 yds men' 6 backstroke title. ' Results:— CHAMPIONSHIP EVENTS. 100 Yards Men's. N.Z. record, 55 4-ss, R. Thomas and W. Cameron, Wellington; holder of title, R. Thcmas. —N. Crump (North Shore) 1, R. Fraukham (Mount Eden) 2, R. Thomas (Grammar) 3. It was an even start. Crump had a slight advantage going down the baths the first time, with Lazarus and Frankham racing together. On the return journey Crump anil Frankham drew away from the other competitors. With half the distance covered, Frankham spurted splendidly and, amid great excitement, drew level with his opponent as he turned lor the linal lap. It looked like a neck-and-neck battle over the remainder of the distance, but Frankham had made his best effort, and when Crump's line swimming took him in front again, the -Mount Eden man was unable to unwind a second challenge, Crump winning by a yard. Thomas had made good time over the second half of the distance and was within four feet of the second man at the linish. Time, 55 l-5s —a New Zealand record.

100 Yards Ladies'. Auckland and N.Z. record, (54 4-ss, Miss M. Farauhar: holder of title, Miss M. Farquhar.—Miss Barbara Lewin (Grammar) 1, Miss Sylvia Grange (North Shore) 2. The fact tiiat there were only two starters robbed the race of much of its interest. Miss Grange had the advantage at the first touch, but Miss Lewin gained at tin.- turn. With the second turn completed, Miss Lewin had a definite advantag anil, going down the baths for the third lap, she drew ahead and finished two yards ahead of her rival. Time, 05s. 220 i'ards Men's Breaststroke. N.Z. record, 3.4, L. Smith. Manawatu; holder of title, J. Magce.—J. Mageo (North Shore) 1. W. Hunter (Waitemata) 2, G. Hager (Ponsonby) 3. Going into the lead at the start, Magee looked a winner all the way. Hunter, Hager and P. Slianahan kept together for 50 yards, but on the third lap Hunter drew ahead from the other two, although he was well behind Magee. With none to challenge him, Mageo finished a very easy winner, Hunter being a good live yards behind second. When Magce finished Eager and Slianahan had not yet turned at the 200 yards mark. Hager finished more strongly than Slianahan and .was. a-very third. Time, 3.8

220 Yards Ladles' Breaststroke. Auckland and N.Z. record, 3.27 3-5. Miss J. Webster; holder Of title. Miss .1. Webster.— Miss J. Webster (Mount Eden) 1, Miss .T. Thompson 2. Willi Miss Thompson the only other competitor the real interest in this event was whether or not Miss Webster could improve her own national figures. She went in front of Miss Thompson on the first time down the baths, and, swimming finely, increased the gap at every lap. Both girls were applauded as tney mushed, with long cheering coming when it was announced that the record had been bettered by no less than four seconds. Time, 3.23 3-5.

220 Yards Men's. Auckland and N.Z. record, 2.22 1-5, R. Frankliam ; holder of title, R. Frnnkham.—N. Crump (North Shore) 1, R. Thomas (Grammar) 2, It, Frankhnm (Mount Eden) 3. The competitors were right on their tors and all three went intothe water for a false start. No sooner had they got into position again than Frankliam and Crump beat theadnrter a second time. At the third atfetffpt the trio were sent away well. At the end of the first lap Crump had a load of a foot, with Frankhnm just ahead of Thomas. The trio kept well together, with Frankliam making up a fraction at the turns. At the end of four laps Crump held a handy lead from Frankliam. He was well in front going down the baths for the sixth time, but excitement was added to the race by the strong finish staged by Thomas, who forged ahead of Frankliam. When Crump touched the tape Thomas was tiiree yards back, four yards in front of Frankliam, who tired perceptibly over the final stages. Time. 2.22—a New Zealand record.

Raper, Ponsonby, 1; C. Buchanan, North Shore, 2. The only starters. Buchanan went to the front at the start and held a fair lead until the second turn, when Kaper made up half the difference.
