WAITANGI EMBLEM.
NEW FIVE-SHILLING PIECE. SIGNING OF TREATY. (By Telegraph.—'Special Reporter.) WAITANGI, Tuesday. The announcement that the five-shil-ling piece of the new Dominion coinage will bear a representation of the eigning of the Treaty of Waitangi was made by the Minister of Finance, the Et. Hon. J. G. Coates, at the conference with the Maoris to-day. The Minister said the decision, which had been made only that morning, concerned the crown piece, commonly known as a "cart-wheel."
Mr. Coates added that the representa--tron of the treaty scene would include the. figures of the first Governor of New Zealand. Captain William Hobson, R.N., the Rev. Henry Williams, one or two other missionaries, Tamati Waka Nene and other chiefs. Tlie pictorial representation would convey the message that the treaty meant everything to the people of New Zealand.
Like the half-crown and sixpence which have recently been put into circulation, the new live-shilling piece was designed by Mr; George Krtiger Cray, who was also responsible for the new series of English coins minted in 1927.
