RESTING IN GARDEN.

ARREST AT AVONDALE. V MAN LOOKING FOR WORK. Arrested in Avondale last evening, charged with being found without lawful excuse on enclosed premises, William Henry Mundey, labourer, aged G4, appeared before Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., in the Police Court this morning. He pleaded guilty to the charge, and said he had merely been resting in a garden while 011 his way to Swanson looking for work.

Detective-Sergeant McHugh sard Mundey had several previous convictions for similar offences. There was really no •harm in the man, but he made a nuisance of himself.

Mundey proved to be a garrulous man, and the magistrate had the greatest difficulty in getting a word in. "I called on two or three people, including the vicar of my church," accused said. "All I wanted was a drink of water and some bread to help me on my way. I was just beaten and I couldn't go any further, so I sat down to have a rest."

"I think .three months' imprisonment might do you good. You have been in prison before," said the magistrate. "Yes, it might." said Mundey. "It would be a rest, anyway. I can work, I can walk, and I can run. Fin not afraid of work, hard work, too." Mundey was asked if he ever tried to into a relief camp, but he replied that he liked working 011 his own better. 4fiter a long discussion between tlie magistrate and Mundey, he was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within twelve months.
