BEAUTIFUL VOICES.
EXCELLENT THING IN WOMEN
One of the greatest charms a woman can possess is a beautiful speaking voice. A really musical, low-pitched voice is, of course, a natural gift, but even an ugly tone can be improved by treatment, and an ordinary voice can be given charm if one tries hard enough. Affectation imiftt bo avoided, for an unnatural, ultra-refined way of speaking is almost as unpleasant a* a harsh voice. One can, however, cultivate clear, soft tones, pleaeant enunciation, and a gentle way of speaking. So many of us get into the way of giving snappy answers when questioned, of using nagging tones, ot having an irritable'voice, of shouting or being-ehrijl or harsh. If we only thought before wo spoke, we would perhaps-re-member sometimes to pitch our voices low, to speak clearly, to sound ; tne vowels and consonants properly, and altogether to try to make our voice* as beautiful as possible. A low, gentle tone is very soothing, and a woman who has a charming way of speaking is generally much sought after, for _ her voice alone comforts and helps to diepel worries and anger. Try to put sympathy, kindness and gentleness in your tones, and you will find, yourself thinking kind, sympathetic and gentle thoughts. If one takes lessons in singing, elocution, or voice production, it helps one to cultivate a beautiful speaking voice, but one can do a great deal by oneself by practising deep breathing and avoiding harsh, metallic tones.
