SWIMMING.

PGNSONBY CLUB'S CARNIVAL

MOJTA LEYDON BREAKS RECORD. SPECTACULAR RELAY RACES. The outstanding performance at the Ponsonby Amateur Swimming and LifeSaving Club's carnival at the Tepid Baths last night was the effort of Mona Leydon in knocking exactly eight seconds off the New Zealand record -for 200 metres. Gwitha Shand's time of 2.53 4-5 had stood for eleven years, until the Ponsonby champion (also Dominion 220 and 440 titleholder) last night put up the remarkable figures of 2.45 4-5, in a special attack upon the record. Mona naturally received a great ovation from the large crowd and was subsequently the recipient of many congratulations.

Tile several relay races were interesting and exciting, and as they were well distributed through the programme these spectacular, events —some of them six a side (mixed swimmers) and one with teams of nine in the water —kept the spectators in excellent humour.

The chief event decided was the ladies' diving championship of Auckland. In this the champion of last year, B. Cooke, Mount Eden Club, was deposed, the title being won by 1. Long, also of the Mount Eden Club. Miss Long and E. Bunting, of the Ponsonby Club, were the two contestants chosen by the judges to dive off for the championship. Miss Bunting failed in her last dive, and Miss Long, who had given a fine all-round display, was awarded first place. Gordon Smith not only scored in the 50 yards club championship in the smart time of 26 l-ss, but later won the heat of the open CG 2-3 yards, in which New Zealand's leading sprint swimmers, lYankham, Crump and Thomas, competed. The Mount Eden crack was timed at 34 l-5s for this race.

Barbara Lewin's figures in taking the firet heat of the ladies' hundred—one of the best of many fme finishes during the evening—were 67 3-ss, but naturally will have to go faster still to defeat the provincial and . New Zealand champion, Marie Farquhar, next Tuesday night, as the latter established the Dominion record of 64 4-5s in annexing the Auckland title last summer.

Iα winning her heat and final of the hundred in open company, the young North Shore swimmer, Dorothy Miles, gave the best performance of her career. The Auckland intermediate boys' breaststroke champion, D. Shanahan, lowered his own Auckland record of 81s to 78 3-5s in winning the 100 yards breaststroke handicap. The oflicials were:—Referee, J. Enriglit; controller and handicapper, Kex Moore (many tine finishes rewarded his efforts); starter and secretary, Lea Brighton; check starters, P. Worden, I' , .
