RELIEF WORKS.
NEW LYNN BOROUGH." In accordance with the new policy of the Unemployment Board, the New Lynn Borough Council received advice last evening that the following works have been approved up to the limit expenditure as follows :—
Lawson Park, £250, reformation Bollard Avenue £550, Astley Avenue £820, Hutchinson Avenue £520, Gardner Street £!ino, Rimu Street £250, Titirangi Road £30. In regard to the work specified in schedule A (Rewarewa Bridge), the board is prepared to consider subsidising the particular jobs on receipt of advice from the' council of the arrangements it is prepared to enter into respecting payment at full time rates to the men so employed.
The Mayor, Mr. George Lanvsoh, stated that-"the relief labour costs averaged £340 per week, and the work approved would last about three months if the same number of men were employed. In respect to new works, the finances of the 'borough would not enablo the council to promote constructive works and' employ a large number of men at full, time rates of pay. If, however, the borough, finances improved, the council would only be too pleased to help in increasing the earning power of the unemployed. The . works authorised were referred to the works committee, and the .question of new construction left in the hands of the Mayor.
