TWO BELIEF WORKERS.
BCOKMAKING AT TAKAPUNA
TIME TO PAY REFUSED.
Two men named William Thomas Simpson and Alexander Simpson appeared before Mr. Wyvern Wilson, S.M., in the Police Court to-day, charged with carrying on the business of a bookmaker at Takapuna racecourse yes-
terday. .. Each plcadefl guilty. ' Detective Sergeant MeTlugh said both men were in the outside enclosure, and Mr. P. Cullon, racecourse inspector, and the police had kept them under observation. A constable succeeded in placing three bets. Later William Simpson admitted that he was aeting as bookmaker and that Alexander Simpson was writing up the wagers taken. The former had £1.7 in his possession. They admitted betting on the course on both days of the meeting. Nothing was known against either.
One of the men asked for leniency, stating that he was only a relief worker and was a, married man with two children. He added that he had no money.
"Beinjr relief workers does not make anv difference," said the magistrate.
"Other members of the community are not allowed to live by crime. You are each lined £25, or one month's imprisonment." Time to pay was refused, the magistrate stating that the men could send out for the money, and would only be released when it was paid.
