OBITUARY.

CAPTAIN C. P. BROPHY.

The death is announced in the "Christchurch Times" of Captain Charles Payne Brophy, aged 88 years, who spent half a century at sea. He was born in Jersey, Channel Islands, and went to sea as a boy of 12. In 1874 he was an officer of the Gloucester, which brought the first load of Chinamen (278) from Hongkong to Dunedin. He obtained his master's certificate in 1875 and subsequently made many voyages to New Zealand in command of sailing ships, which he eventually relinquished for steam. Captain Brophy was with the Westport Coal Company for some time, and afterwards, for 21 years with the U?iion Steam Ship Company, retiring in 100 S. He leaves three daughters, Mrs. John Simpson, Dunedin, Mrs. R. A. Bagshaw. Fendalton, and Mrs. B. T. Tosswell, MeriVale. Mrs. Brophy died last March.

MR. GEORGE HARVEY. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) DANNEVIRKE, this day. The death has occurred of Mr. George Harvey. He was for 24 years headmaster of the Dannevirke South School, and retired on superannuation in 1924. Prior to his retirement he was the mainstay of the Teachers' Institute in southern Hawkc's Bay, being secretary and chairman for many years.
