DEFENDING PACIFIC.

AN IMPORTANT CONFERENCE

LONDON, January 25

The presence of Australian and New Zealand admirals at the Singapore Naval Conference, which began on January 23, indicates the discussion of problems of much wider significance than the future of the Singapore base, says the "NewsChronicle."

Despite official statements that it is only the ordinary periodical conference, newspapers generally stress its importance. The '"News-Chronicle" expresses the opinion that discussions will largely centre around British strength and strategy in the Pacific, following Japanese actions, notably her determination to demand parity with England and America at the expiration of the London Treaty, which are radically altering the position.

The. admirals will also be interested in the defence of Australasia and the trade routes, resulting in decisions of major importance to the Admiralty.

The "Evening Standard," in a leading article, expresses the hope that the admirals will recommend stronger fortifications at Singapore, to ensure the safety of British ships during refitting.

KEPT A DEEP SECRET.

SINGAPORE CONFERENCE,

SINGAPORE, January 20.

The naval chiefs at the defence conference refuse to indicate the nature of their discussions. They will disperse this week without making any official statement. The cruiser Hawkins left for Colombo to-day.
