RED CROSS WORK.

NEW ZEALAND ASKED TO HELP (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Thursday. 1 On rcceipt of the news of the Indian earthquake the following cablegram was dispatched to the Indian Red Cross Society:—"The New Zealand Red Cross Society extends its sympathy to the people of India in the unfortunate earthquake disaster." To-day a reply was received from the Indian Society as follows:—"Grateful for sympathy with earthquake victims. There were 4000 deaths, several towns were ruined and the loss of property amounts to many crores of rupees." The Dominion headquarters of the society received the following cablegram from the headquarters of _ the League of Red Cross Societies, Rans.

"The Indian Red Cross confirms the gravity of tlic disaster. All assistance will be welcomed. The International Relief Union has given an advance of £1000. Cable contributions dircct to Delhi or through the League of Red Cross Societies for the Indian Red Cross or International Relief Union." On receipt of this message Major Abel, chairman of the Dominion executive, immediately communicated with all the Red Cross centres requesting response to the appeal. Contributions already received by the Red Cross Society are: Wellington Centre, £25; South Taranaki Centre, £5; Napier Centre, £10 10/; Palmerston North Centre, £5. A 1 message from Christcliurcii says the CanI terbury branch of the society has voted £20 to the fund. A cablegram has been received by the New Zealand Baptist Missionary Society from its missionaries in East Bengal reporting that no damage was clone to mission property as the earthquake did not affcct that district.
