DANGEROUS CORNER
IMPROVEMENT IN PARNELL With a view to ensuring greater visibility at the intersection of Bassett Road, Shore Road, Brighton Road and Ayr Street, the City Council last evening decided to acquire plots of land to make possible the rounding off of the corner to a, radius of 66ft. This will involve the purchase by the council of one portion 1.3 perches in area, and another of 1.1 perches. The intersection is one. at which a serious accident occurred several months ago, and at that time it was pointed out that the corner was a bad one for traffic visibility. The city -engineer, Mr. J. Tyler, had reported to the works committee that the total cost of altering the two corners should not exceed £45. The kerbs wouid not require any alteration as they were adequately rounded off now. The cost of improvements would include the expenses of re-erecting a fence, drainage, restoring the ground, and land transfer charges. The committee visited the site, and the city engineer negotiated with the owners of the properties concerned. Aickeu and Sous, owners of the southwestern corner, stated that they were prepared to convey the corner 25ft each way under minor conditions, if the council bore all costs. The offer was accepted.
