PHOTOGRAPHS OF A KNIFE.
CORRESPONDING CUTS ON WOOD. POLICE EXPERT'S CONCLUSIONS. Photographs of a knife and of knife cuts on a piece of timber were produced by Senior-Sergeant E. W. Dinnie, in charge of the Criminal Registration Branch, this morning at the tenth day of the hearing of the double murder charge against William Alfred Bayly. From microscopic photographs magnified eight and a half times, Senior-Sergeant Dinnie concluded that cuts on a piece of wood from near Lakey's implement shed were made by the knife produced. Other marks on the wood hardly visible to the naked eye showed clearly when enlarged, and the expert concluded that these small marks had been made by the point of a steel, of which he also produced photographs. Arrangements have been made- for the Court to sit again to-night, when Dr. Brown, another expert, is likely to be the witness. He is to give photographic evidence relating to cartridges. It is hoped to finish the Lower Court hearing tomorrow afternoon, but if witnesses still remain to be heard, the Court will sit on Monday, Anniversary Day.
