STABLE AND TRACK NOTES.

BENEFITED BY RACE. The race Glenrata had at Pukekolie last Saturday did linn a lot of good and he has been shaping much better in his work since, it is some time since this hack won a race, but Jie is a useful sort when at his best and may soon reach the winning list again. He is due to make his next appearance at the Takapuna meeting and is worth keeping in mind at that fixture. A PROSPECTIVE HURDLER. Chang, who has been entered for hurdle events at the Egmont meeting, has done a fair amount of schooling at Te Rapa and shows promise for a beginner. He is tiie ideal type to make a successful hurdler, for lie has plenty o fspeed, and also stays on well. Chang is a half-brother to Paddon, a useful performer over hurdles, and when he has had a bit of experience should pay his way in the new department. IN FIRST-RATE CONDITION. Although Courthaven has not been asked to do anything special in the way of fast gallops recently, she has been working exceptionally well and is in first-rate condition. The daughter of Pantheon won a high-weight handicap at the Takapuna spring meeting and will contest similar events at the coming fixture. Courthaven possesses a fair amount of staying ability, and in her present conditiou. should put up a creditable showing. A SURPRISE WINNER. Saltspray, who recorded a surprise victory in the Melrose Handicap at Trentham yesterday, is an Australian-bred gelding by Salt Ash from Aries. He did some racing in the Auckland district during the holidays, competing at the Waipa and Auckland meetings, but his form was very moderate. He beat some smart hacks yesterday, and summed up on that performance his future prospects look much brighter. MASTER BRIERLY'S PROSPECTS. Since racing at tlie Auckland summer meeting Master Brierly has made excellent progress and promises to strip at the top of his form for his Takapuna Cup contest on Saturday. He is one of the best stayers in the race, and the fact that he has previously won on the suburban course is a bit in his favour. Master Brierly will be ridden by his trainer, R. S. Bagby, and with a good run during the race is sure to be in the firing line at the finish. WILL GET GOOD SUPPORT. | As the result of his success in the Kawakawa Cup good support is likely to be forthcoming for Whakapara, if he goes to the post in the Takapuna Cup. So far the Kilbroney gelding has not won beyond ten furlongs, but he is now displaying more stamina than formerly and may be capable of running out the extra distance on Saturday. Ilis speed will enable him to secure a good position early in the race, and if patiently ridden he will keep the top-weights busy. IN GOOD FORM. Prince Colossus was in good form at the Wellington meeting, where he won two high-weight events, and he is now on the right side of the ledger, having won four races during the season. He is a big upstanding gelding, also a good weight carrier, who should be capable of earning more stake-money as the season advances. Prince Colossus is engaged at the Egmont meeting, to be held early in February, and if he reproduces his Trentham form he | will be hard to beat. DISTANCE WILL SUIT HIM. The form displayed by Baroscope at the spring meetings was good and consistent, but now that the ground is hard he has failed to display the same dash. He is down to contest the chief event at the Takapuna meeting at the end of the week, and if sufficient rain falls in the interim to soften the ground he can be relied on to put up a bold showing. Baroscope has previously shown his ability to see out the distance, therefore his prospects will have to be seriously considered.
