LARGE CITY BLOCK.
PROPERTY IN WELLINGTON. OFFERED AT AUCTION. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Wednesday. The city pr operty known as the .Island Block, with frontages to four streets, including Bond and Manners Streets, the latter being one of the principal retail thoroughfares, was offered at auction to-day. The Government valuation of the block is £54,000. . The block was first put up as a whole. Bidding started at £31,000, and went up by £1000 bids to £34,000, when the auctioneer offered to accept £500 bids. None being forthcoming, the property as one lot was withdrawn. The lot facing Manners Street was put up separately, and drew an initial bid of £20,000. When it reached £21,500 it was withdrawn for private sale. The lot facing Bond Street went up to £12,000 before being withdrawn.
