ART UNIONS.
PROFITS RECEDE. | I £14,000 DOWN TO £5000. STATEMENT BY MR. FORBES. (By Tclcgrapli.—Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, this day. Profits from art unions are falling at a very rapid pace. A year or two ago the big art unions were bringing in a net return of about £14,000, but now the returns have sunk to about £5000. This information was given the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes, to-day when he was asked by an athletic organisation for a grant from an art union. Mr. Forbes said the relief of d''stres§ va& usually given first call on the proceeds, and after that grants were made to organisations of a charitable and social nature. Assistance, said Mr. Forbes, was also given to organisations which had their bank advances guaranteed by members, some of whom were not now in- a position to meet the call on the guarantors.
