KING NEEDED?

AUSTRIA'S FUTURE.

Reported Restoration of

Monarchy.

FIGHT WITH NAZI-ISM.

United r.A.—Electric Telegraph-Copyright)

(Received 12 noon.)

LONDON, January 19,

A "Daily Express" special correspondent predicts that Austria will be compelled, before the end of this year, to restore the Hapsburg monarchy if the menace of Hitlerism is to be averted. Dr. Dollfuss, the Chancellor, will be bound to call on the Archduke Otto to unite all Nationalists in the one cause.

An elaborate welcome was given to Signor Suvieli, Italian Under-Secretary to the Foreign Office, when he. arrived to confer with the Chancellor, Dr. Dollfuss. It was marred by a violent demonstration by Nazis, however, who regard the visit as due to Signor Mussolini's attempt to maintain the independence of Austria from Germany.

Nazis gathered at the railway station and attempted to dliplay flags and swastikas, but the police prevented this.

Thereupon the Nazis exploded two detonators. Signor Suvieh's progress was punctuated by jeers and shouts of: "Hail, Hitler." At night Nazis exploded bombs in the city and extinguished all the lights in the neighbourhood of Signor Suvieh's hotel.

The police arrested 040 persons, including Count Alberti and several of his associates. They have been charged with conspiracy against the State.

In spite of the disturbance Signor Suvich carried out his programme. This included a broadcast speech.

Dr. Dollfuss, after two conversations with tlie visitor, provided a surprise. Instead of announcing the expected declaration of peace between Austria and Germany he said his Government had reached the end of its patience and now was determined to restore order with all its force, without counting the cost.

BALKAN FINANCES.

MR. BRUCE OPTIMISTIC. (Received 1 p.m.) GENEVA, January 19. Mr. S. M. Bruce's report to the League Council on Austrian, Hungarian and Bulgarian finances is more optimistic than his predecessor's. He declared that Austria's economic situation is improving, Hungary's position has ceased to deteriorate and Bulgaria's trade balance is better, though neutralised by the relief of debtors, extensive loans and also the purchase of the wheat crop, artificially inflated by prices double the world parity. • Tlie report advises Bulgaria to keep in close contact the League experts in order to avoid this.
