SIX LIVES LOST.
Of England.
STEAMERS IN DISTRESS,
(British Official Wireless.)
RUGBY, January 19,
Severe Storms Break on Coasts
The northern and western portions of the British Isles suffered most severely in Wednesday's gales. Six lives were lost in disasters at sea. Several exciting rescues of the crews of steamers in distress were effected by lifeboatmen with life-saving gear.
Twenty-two seamen were saved from two steamers, one of which ran ashore off the Cornisli coast, and the other off Cumberland. Exceptionally high tides on the west coast oii England and Wales, backed by gales, caused floods in the seaside resorts.
High winds at the river mouth piled up the Thames tide yesterday afternoon to 14in over the predicted water-mark at London Bridge. The authorities had issued a preliminary warning, as is usual when a high tide is anticipated. However, no damage was done.
