NEW HOSPITAL.
TENDERS FOR £63,000 BLOCK SIX-STOREY BUILDING. Tenders for the new block to be erected at the Mater Misericordiae Hospital, in Mountain Road, have been accepted as follows: — W. J. Crevatt and Son, Limited, Auckland, for building, £55,580; Waygood, Ltd., for two elevators, £2770; Electric Construction Company, for electric lighting 1 , £2165. The architect, Mr. Daniel B. Patterson, of Auckland, estimated the cost of the work at' £(>O,OOO. The new block will be a six-storey steel-frame building covering an area of 150 ft by 90ft. It will provide accommodation for 80 patients bringing the total number of beds in the hospital to 120. It will have brick curtain walls, concrete floors and a flat roof. The exterior will be finished in red brick, with white cement facings, and at the roof level on the eastern facade will be a statue of religious significance, set under a canopy. Wards and private rooms will provide accommodation for patients and there will also be sun balconies on all floors. A bed lift will give access to the roof, which will also be used for sun treatment. The main office will be on the ground floor where there will be a spacious lounge hall, reception rooms and five wards, each containing eight beds. Forty private rooms will be distributed over the first and second' floors. Each room will have its own bathroom. On the top floor will be three operating theatres, a chemist's laboratory, theatre, workrooms, X-ray department and a suite of rooms for a resident doctor. In view of the fact that the building will be set on a slope, there will be two other floors below the ground floor. Here will be kitchens, laundries, staff dining rooms and an out-patients' department. The block will be steamheated throughout and electric washing and drying appliances are proposed, together with a refrigerating plant for the kitchen.
