THAMES COUNTY AFFAIRS.
NEW ROADS REQUESTED. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) THAMES, this day. The Thames County Council met yesterday afternoon, Mr. H. Lowe presiding. A deputation of Kirikiri settlers asked that the Kirikiri Road be constructed before the winter, it being stated that the settlers were prepared to pay toward the cost of construction. The Public Works Department notified that it was prepared to carry out the necessary survey, but that no liability would be accepted for the construction of the road. The council agreed that the road should be made, on the condition that the settlers did the construction work. A deputation of Puru ratepayers asked the council to bituminise six chains of the main road at Puru. It was decided that the matter be reviewed when the next estimates arc considered. The Thames Development Committee asked that the council should support an effort to open up the Kauaearanga-Tairua Road, which would give access to a considerable area of land for settlement, and would bring Thames within two hours of the east coast districts. It was decided to reply that in the opinion of the council the road was not warranted, and that the cost of maintenance made it impossible for the council to support the request.
