FRIENDLY SOCIETIES

ACTIVITIES RESUMING.

NEW YEAR MEETINGS. SOCIAL GATHERINGS. The youthful Enterprise Temple, 1.0. G.T., resumed its weekly meetings on Thursday last, a very fair attendance being registered. No special business was transacted, but the members were interested in a communication from Sister Arriens, 1.5. J.W., of Holland, who sent a number of articles used by the Order in propaganda work in that country. These included a Good Tom pier match box, a wrapper from 1.0. G.T. chocolate, two periodicals, a calendar and diary. Many of tho young people intend to communicate with their Dutch colleagues with a view of exchanging stamps, views, match boxes, etc. This is an international relationship of good will started between the juveniles of different countries. After a brief session, tho members adjourned' to Jellicoe Park where games were played.

The close of 1033 saw the end of a very instructive and enjoyable period for tho Auckland Past Grands Lodge, 1.0.0. F., M.U. Apart from the conferring of past officers' degrees, two well attended lectures were given. The first by Bro. W. McMillan, P.D.G.M., on the "History of Friendly Societies," and the second' by Bro. B. V. Closey on tho "Past History and Emblem of Our Order." These lectures were fully appreciated by the lodge members. The annual Christmas party was held during December and proved a great success. A very enjoyable programmo was arranged and a warm welcome given to the guest of the evening Santa 'Claus (in the person of Bro. Sntcliffe), who kept both children and adults happy during his stay with them. Afternoon tea was served to parents and visitors, bringing a memorable party to a successful con-* elusion. Great credit is due to the tireless secretary, Bro. H. V. Hampton, P.G., for his organisation, and to the committee who assisted him.

The annual meeting of Branch 81, H.A.C'.B.S. was held at the lodge room, Hobson Street, on January 8, 1934. The attendance was good, and the chief business of the evening—the election of officers—resulted in Bro. H. S. Moxham being chosen as president, for the new term. Bro. M. Xola is the new vicepresident; Bro. Kane, secretary; Bro. Duffin, treasurer; Bro. ,T. Tuohey, warden; Bro. P. Barry, guard; and Bros. P. Duflin and J. Corbett. sick visitors. The reports showed that during the last twelve months, in spite of the difficult times, the branch has made steady progress. All the funds and investments are in a healthy condition, and members are confident that 1934 will see continued progress and prosperity for the society.

Gordon' Tent, 1.0. R., held their first meeting* of the Xew \ear on Tuesday evening, the chief ruler, Bro. T. N, Ashe, presiding over a good attendance! l he routine business was carefully gone through nTuI a very interesting discussion took place on the ritual work and how it coukl be improved. Finally a committee, consisting of Bros. Ashe, McGrocott. Pace and Campling, was set un to consider the matter and brinn- forward recommendations to the ne.\t°meet-

r V-?" nI meeting of the Loyal Dominion Lodge, 1.0.0. F., M.U., was held in the Friendly Societies' Hali •Carmen Avenue, on Tuesday evening last The N.G., Sister E. Taylor, pre" , ed over a large attendance of members, and extended a hearty welcome to the visitors present from Loyal Remuera, Wainmuku and Auckland Past Grand .Lodges. At the close of the business the stewards for the evening served supper, after which a very happy time was spent in games, dancing and cards. lie Light of Manukau Lodge. U.A.0.D.. held its fortnightly meeting in the lodge room, Grey Street, Onehunga, on Wednesday evening, the A.D., Bro. McDermott, presiding over a splendid attendance .of members and visitors, the latter including two teams of indoor bowlers from Roskill Lodge. The ordinary business was quickly but efficientlyput through, and the secretary, Bio. H. Wells, announced that he would present a gold medal to the member introducing the most new brothers during the New \ear. At the close of the lodge a bowling match between Manukau and Roskill took place for the Robson Rose Bowl, the former being the holders. The visitors proved to be in deadly form, one skip, Bro. P. Noad. especially distinguishing himself. Both of the visitors' teams had a clear-cut victory, and left on their way rejoicing. Supper was served during the interval, and various toasts honoured.

The Enterprise Lodge, 1.0. G.T., met on Thursday evening, the C.T., Sister Mel l aria nc, being the presiding officer. Although many members are still on holidays, the attendance was good, and keen interest was shown in the business. A moonlight picnic has been arranged for the end of this month, and a good time is expected. The programme for the evening was in the hands of the married members, and items were given by Bro. Ardern and Sister Jameson.

In the* absence of the N.G.. Bro. Powley, who is in hospital, the meeting of Epsom Lodge, No. 88, 1.0.0 F., was presided over by Bro. M. J. Hooper, P.G.M. It was reported by Bro. Tattersall that the social function held had been very successful, and it was decided to continue the social evenings arranged by the Maungarei, Rebekah and Epsom Lodges until the end of the term. Ar-

rangements have been made for the Epsom degree team to confer degrees before the end of the month, and the Rebekahs are rehearsing for their ritual competition. Bro. Hooper then introduced and welcomed a distinguished visitor in the person of Bro. Valentine, P.G.M., of Dunedin. Bro. Valentine gave an interesting and instructive address on the work and progress of the Order in different parts of the world. Bro. Mulholland, P. 0., returned thanks on behalf of the lodge in his usual humorous manner. The Epsom brothers are looking forward to another visit from the Onchunga Rechabites, when the visitors will be presented with the Rooster challenge trophy won by them on their last visit. On that occasion Bro. Mulhollaud promised to present the trophy for competition between the lodges at indoor bowls. On Tuesday the rooster arrived, and was presented to lodge. The bird was made by Bro. Gribble P. 0., from Bro. Mulholland's designs. It is. a very fine piece of work, although the breed of the bird is hard to determine. Bro. Valentine called it "a braw bird," but needless to say he is a Scotsman. The motto of the lodge is printed on opposite sides of the trophy. The acting-N.G. suitably returned thanks 011 behalf of . the lodge for the kind gift, and expressed the hope that the games between ' lodges would he as keen and harmonious as they have always been in the past. 1
