RUMOUR DENIED.

Mme. Lupescu's Arrival in London. SAID TO BE IN BUCHAREST. (Received 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, January 14. The Rumanian Legation declares that Madame Lupescu, King Carol's favourite, is still at Bucharest. It had been reported that she had left Rumania. An earlier message stated that Madame Lupescu had arrived secretly in London accompanied by two Rumanian officers.

KING'S FAVOURITE

GUARDS FOR MME. LUPESOU,

LONDON, January 9.

The fact that Madame Lupescu, King Carol's favourite, who has now left Rumania, is a Jewess, has brought down upon her and the King the anger of the "Iron Guards," the Fascist and antiSemite organisation in says the Vienna correspondent of the "Daily Mail." On the other hand, the friends of the late Premier, Dr. Duca, assassinated by a member of the "Iron Guard, aro angry because the King did not attend the funeral. They believe that the reason of ill-health given on behalf of the King was an excuse and that he remained in his palace at Sinaia because of Mme. Lupescu's entreaties. She, also, it is asserted, has persuaded him to stay there and not to return to Bucharest because, if he did, his life would bo in danger. "Death letters" are said to have been sent to the King, Mme. Lupescu, and to politicians, by the "Iron Guards." Like King Carol, his favourite was being specially guarded. She lived in a villa outside the castle grounds at Sinaia. By a private path Carol frequently visited her, and telephoned at all hours. He ventured nowhere else. Many Rumanians are leaving Bucharest on the pretext of winter sports in the Alps, but really from sheer panic. The entire army has been mobilised for protection of the politicians and the Jewish population.
