FRUIT PROSPECTS

THE EXPORT SEASON. FIRST SHIPMENT IN" FEBRUARY. I Although the New Zealand Friut Export Control Board at is conference last week decided upon new marketing arrangements in regard to produce sent to the London market, the prospects for the season are still uncertain.

Last season, when the fruit exported to London was sold through one agency, abnormal conditions were experienced, and the returns were not profitable to growers. This year the board has decided that growers may, at their option, nominate their own broker from a panel of six selected by the board for the marketing of fruit in London. The other change decidcd by the board is the abolition of the pooling scheme and a reversion to individual accounts, except where growers participate in forward sales. The first shipment of this season's fruit from the Dominion will be made in the first week of next month, when the Mataroa is due to sail from Wellington. The period of time from the calling of this vessel at Auckland and sailing from Wellington is prejudicial to shipping tho Gravenstein and Worcester crops from this port, and they will have to be railed to Wellington. Present indications are that about 100,000 cases of apples will be shipped from Auckland this season. Last season the total was 121,000.
