STOCK IN QUARANTINE.

EXCESSIVE TRANSPORT RATES Charges for the transportation of stock to and from the quarantine station at Motuilii were criticised by Mr. Austin Carr, president of the Auckland Agricultural and Pastoral Association, as excessive and a "proper scandal." Mr. Carr said the return cost for a sheep or a pig was £4, while the charge for a dog was £2. He considered the charges were too great, especially when tho return fare for a human being visiting the island was only 1/0. The association had made representations 011 the matter to the Agricultural Department, but the reply was that the Depart ment could not do anything. He still thought strenuous steps should be taken to secure moderation in the charges. The Royal Agricultural Society of New Zealand, which had made inquiries into the matter, wrote stating that the charges had been gazetted and were carefully scrutinised by the Treasury to see that the regulations had been complied with. The inspector of the society had interviewed the director of the live stock division and had been informed that there was little chance of revision, as the present scale did not pay.
